—Jack Britton is an artist and data scientist living in Washington, DC.
I double-majored in Economics (Honors) and Philosophy at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada. During my summer semesters, I interned with Sun Life Financial, PD Frazer Associates, and Dawson Strategic working in fields ranging from political consulting to risk management. After graduation, I worked in actuarial analyst in Toronto for a year before immigrating to Washington, DC.
Now, I balance my day job as Head of Data Science at Virtru with personal creative work—like painting and programming in Python. In my current role, I have the privilege of developing advanced analytics models to improve the operations and product development functions at Virtru. This experience turned me on to the idea of applying my skills to solve problems for real people and communities.
My creative approach to art and code—no matter the medium—is to find points of tension behind an idea or problem I am developing in my work. Often times, I will seek out the most controversial iterations of these ideas in the work I create. For me, controversy isn’t about confrontation, but is instead a way to arrest your audience. It’s a way to plant a little bit of passion in their hearts; a yearning to keep digging and learn more about your idea. Ultimately, it’s about creating solutions for tough problems.
