The form and content of MOON was inspired by the luminous paintings of Yun Shouping, a painter in 17th century Qing Dynasty China. See the panel to the far right for an example of Yun Shouping's unique style of watercolor painting, known as mogu hua or the "boneless" method, in which forms were built using color alone without ink contours.
I learned so much about creating distinct contours and shapes in my watercolor work by building up layers of luminous pigment into distinct fault lines.
In some ways, I felt like I was returning to a way of painting (watercolor) that most artists neglect after they've "moved on" to more flashy methods. It was so refreshing to explore new ways of incorporating watercolor into my repertoire as an artist.
